“Got Away”

Interview by American Songwriter
Van Buren is the American Songwriter Spring Breakup Song Contest Promotion winner with his song “Got Away.” American Songwriter caught up with him to get the story behind the song.
How long have you been songwriting?
I first started writing songs about 10 years ago, but not professionally until 2018.
Why did you enter American Songwriter’s Spring Breakup Promotion?
When I read the description of what the contest was looking for, I knew “Got Away” was perfect for it – I’ve always really believed in this song, and so I’m thrilled it’s getting recognition in this way!
What was the inspiration behind your song, “Got Away”?
There’s quite the backstory behind this song. It all began when I kissed my ex-girlfriend (of 2 years) on the dance floor at a New Year’s Eve party, and she told me she always thought that I was the one that got away….unfortunately, we lived across the country from each other and I ended up meeting a girl in LA soon after that (who I later married!), so I cut things off before they could start up again (admittedly, not my best work). Fast forward a few years, we’re now both happily married to other people, but I kind of always felt bad about how I handled that whole situation. When I brought the idea into a session with my friend Theo Kandel, we both loved the idea of writing a “positive” break-up song that doesn’t talk about hating your ex. He added the perfect little details and layers to bring the song to life!
Are you planning to release any new music this year?
Yes! I’ve actually already released two singles so far this year called “Hindsight” and “Back to You,” and I’ll continue to release a song about every month culminating in a full-length album either later this year or early next year.
What’s one goal you have for your music career in the next year?
I’d love to go on tour and open up for a larger artist!
Who are your all-time favorite songwriters and why?
I have always been a fan of Ryan Tedder (I actually got to spend a few years working for him), his melodies are truly so distinct and I’ve been so inspired by how he’s able to write for artists across so many different genres. I also have always loved Jon Foreman and Ben Rector, both for how they articulate concepts of faith in a not-overt way, and for the honesty in their storytelling. And then Jon Bellion, Aldae and Ilsey Juber are behind some of my favorite music in recent years – I think they are among the best at having a specific artistic voice themselves while also creating something that other artists can shine through.
What would you tell other artists who are considering entering the contest?
Do it! Nothing to lose 🙂
