Sanna Antonia is the American Songwriter May Flowers Promotion winner with her song “April doesn’t hurt here.” American Songwriter caught up with her to get the story behind the song.
How long have you been songwriting?
I’ve been writing since I was a child, but I started to rely on it heavily during my early teen years. It’s always been such an important outlet for me to express myself. I don’t really have words all the time, and sometimes it can be scary to say things how they are. I feel that when I can choose to say how I feel metaphorically, it can feel less onerous, and even more meaningful because people can have the freedom to make it their own.
Why did you enter American Songwriter’s May Flowers Promotion?
I entered because sometimes concrete feedback feels good. It’s easy to second-guess yourself, especially in a world where music is so subjective. I wouldn’t have it any other way though.
What was the inspiration behind your song, “April doesn’t hurt here”?
To me, the month of April has always mirrored a human’s state of limbo. It’s always been that transitional month, after you’ve finished with a long winter and are now waiting for the green. I feel that in this age, so many people feel uncertainty and are formed into an “almost there” mindset. These times, for me, have led to the most discovery. It’s reminded me that, just like the seasons, there will always be warmth, cold, and in between.
Are you planning to release any new music this year?
Definitely yes.
What’s one goal you have for your music career in the next year?
I want nothing more than to connect with others and create. I’d love to release some of my new independent songs and dive deeply into the visual aspect.
Who are your all-time favorite songwriters and why?
I’ve fallen in love with so many. I think Marina would be my all-time favorite lyricist, though. Her album Froot was the first album I really felt fused with. I know I always will be, too. I just love it so much.
I also love the old greats, like Kate Bush, James Blunt, and Stevie Wonder.
I will say that some of my favorite songs have been in lyrics I cannot understand. I grew up listening to all sorts of world music. “Nomvula (After the Rain)” by Freshlyground is my favorite song of all time. Sometimes it’s nice to make a story based off of sounds instead of words.
What would you tell other artists who are considering entering the contest?
Just do it, regardless of if you think you’ll win or not. Only good things could grow from it.
