If you’ve ever shopped at a Whole Foods or gotten a coffee in that new coffee shop in town everyone’s talking about, you’ve heard Khruangbin. The Texas trio’s world-psych-surf instrumentals sound straight out of Cambodia, circa 1965, but in actuality, they’re the work of bassist Laura Lee, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson Jr.
Since the release of their debut album The Universe Smiles Upon You 10 years ago, Khruangbin has stayed the course, cranking out hit after twangy hit in an era largely dominated by synth pop and trap (which I’m told is some kind of hip-hop). And it’s been their trusty Fender guitars all the way—for Lee, a custom Jazz Bass, and Speer, a natural ‘70s Strat.
And now, in tribute to the band, Fender has released their all-new Khruangbin Collection: the Limited Edition Mark Speer Stratocaster and Limited Edition Laura Lee Jazz Bass. These new models are exact replicas of the band’s own instruments that they have customized over the years, with all the specifications to a tee.

The Limited Edition Mark Speer Stratocaster features DiMarzio ProTrack pickups in the neck and bridge, with a ‘70s Fender Strat middle pickup. All-white hardware on a natural-finish ash body complete Speer’s signature ‘70s aesthetic.
The Limited Edition Laura Lee Jazz Bass is loaded with DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups (with vintage-style concentric volume/tone knobs for each pickup), and a custom U-shaped neck to Lee’s spec.
Lee: “A lot of the features on my bass look vintage, but they function in a modern way. We've been trying to cultivate our music to feel classic and timeless, really. To me, the look and feel of this instrument is the same—it just sounds better the more you play it.”

“Khruangbin is a band that has made a huge mark on modern music—they blend cultures, genres, and eras into something entirely their own,” said Justin Norvell, EVP of Product at Fender. “Mark and Laura had built their trademark sound with some unique specs and features on their primary instruments and with these signature models, we wanted to be able to share that with the universe of musicians and fans.”
Whether you’re a superfan looking to get the band’s signature looks and tones, or you just love a good ‘70s Strat (like me), Fender’s new Khruangbin Limited Edition guitars will hit the mark. Available now at Fender.com.
