Cody Jinks on the Music Video for “The Others”

“I’m so glad we get to talk about that song,” Cody Jinks says when asked about “The Others.” Those aren’t just words. His excitement about the new single and its video are written all over his face.

“We just recorded a video for that song in Chattanooga a couple of weeks ago, and we had such a cool time. Such a cool time,” Jinks reveals. “We had all kinds of people. You name the kind of person, and we had them. We had cowboys and punks and metalheads and goths. We had business people and just regular-looking Joes and fans, and actors. There were cowboys swinging from chandeliers, guys breathing fire, and stuntmen rolling down stairs and busting through tables. It was a freak parade, bro. It was awesome,” he says.

Jinks on the Deeper Meaning of the New Single

While his level of excitement about the track doesn’t change, his demeanor does. He becomes a little more serious. The video was a hoot to make. The song itself, though, carries some weight.

“It’s a song about all of us,” he says. “People often ask me about what the attraction was to metal, punk, and all that stuff when I was younger. I tell them it’s because it’s for all the disenfranchised people who don’t belong anywhere. That’s what it is. That’s what the sentiment is behind this song. There’s a place for everyone,” Jinks explains.

“Punks don’t care if you show up to a punk concert and don’t look like a punk. They’re gonna buy you a beer or a Coke or whatever. Metalheads don’t care if you show up and you don’t have tattoos and piercings. Nobody gives a sh*t because it’s pure and real. It’s beautiful,” Jinks points out.

“That’s what I bring to country music, which is not pure and beautiful anymore,” Jinks says. Clarifying the statement, he adds, “There’s a lot of pure, beautiful country music out there. It’s just that what the record labels do is a bastardized version of that. ‘The Others’ is just people who are like, ‘Do what you want to do, man. Just be real.’”

Those who are familiar with Jinks’ career know that “Do what you want to do, man. Just be real,” could sum up the songwriting and attitude that brought him the large and devoted following he has today.
