On This Day in 1991, Trisha Yearwood Blew the Minds of Country Fans Everywhere with Her Self-Titled Debut Album

On this day (July 2) in 1991, Trisha Yearwood released her self-titled debut album. Bolstered by the success of her No. 1 debut single, “She’s in Love with the Boy,” the record quickly climbed the country chart, eventually peaking at No. 2. The album also landed at No. 31 on the Billboard 200, bringing Yearwood early crossover success.

Interestingly, Yearwood wouldn’t land a single in the top 40 of the Hot 100 until “How Do I Live” peaked at No. 23 on the all-genre survey in 1997. That was only her second entry on the chart. However, her albums regularly charted favorably on the Billboard 200. Four of her first six albums from the 1990s were top 40 hits.

However, Yearwood didn’t need crossover success for her singles to make history. “She’s in Love With the Boy” made her the first female artist to go to No. 1 with a debut single in country music history. It was also the only song she released before dropping her debut album. As a result, many fans picked up her self-titled collection on the strength of that song. The rest of the 10-song collection further familiarized fans with the young woman who would become one of the biggest artists of the decade.

Trisha Yearwood Looks Back on Her Debut Single

In 2021, Trisha Yearwood sat down with People to discuss her debut single and what it meant for her and her career.

“We had no idea it would make history,” she told the publication. “It had apparently been around for a few years and had never found the right home. Lucky me!” she added.

Neither Yearwood nor her producer, Garth Fundis, knew the song would be a hit. However, she knew she had to record it after he played her the demo. “We recorded it 100 percent because we like the song,” she recalled. “I loved the story about nobody being good enough for Daddy’s little girl.”

Millions of country fans agree with Yearwood. “She’s in Love With the Boy” has been certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA and has garnered more than 200 million streams on Spotify. More importantly, it launched the career of one of the most popular and influential artists of the 1990s.
