Forming in Rodeo, California during the late 1980s, Green Day helped bring punk rock to the forefront of music thanks to albums like Insomniac and American Idiot. American Idiot became such a success in the music industry that it was eventually adapted into a Broadway musical. As for Green Day, the band never hid their views throughout the years when it came to their thoughts on politics. Recently, the band decided to change the lyrics to “Jesus of Suburbia” to take a shot at Vice President JD Vance.

Since winning the 2024 Presidential Election, President Donald Trump and Vance looked to bring a dramatic shift to how the United States government operated. Trump even brought in Elon Musk to investigate the large amounts of spending by the government. And looking past just America, both Vance and the President berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when he visited the Oval Office.
Criticizing the Ukrainian President for not being thankful for the support from the US, the conversation quickly became a shouting match. Tired of the ongoing circus, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong decided to share his own opinion when taking the stage at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

Green Day’s Lyric Change
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of American Idiot, fans of Armstrong noticed the slight change when he sang, “Am I r*tarted or am I just JD Vance.” That wasn’t the only time the singer used the lyrics to shed light on his disdain for the current administration. He also switched the lyrics, “We are the kids of war and peace/ From Anaheim to the Middle East.” Again, slightly changing the words, Armstrong blurted out, “We are the kids of war and peace/ From Ukraine to the Middle East.”
Although taking aim at JD Vance and Trump, Armstrong didn’t leave Musk out as he also criticized the billionaire back in January. Using Green Day’s own lyrics once again, he changed “I’m not part of the redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of the Elon agenda.”
Green Day gained support for the quick switch, which led to varying reactions. As for the fans that enjoyed the lyric change, one wrote, “My favorite band for a reason.”
